John is a US Marine veteran that served two tours of Iraq between 2005 and 2009. After John left the military he and his wife, Ashley relocated from South Carolina to Utah where John began school at Utah State University. Over the years John has struggled with PTSD and decided to speak with a counselor through the VA. His counselor recommended a dog to help with John’s hyper-vigalance and frustration and got John in touch with Canines With A Cause. Ashley said that Indy has been a Godsend to their family! In the few short weeks that Indy has been with John there has been a difference.
John and Ashley come down to Salt Lake City from Logan (a two hour drive) with Indy once a week to participate in Canine Life and Social Skills (C.L.A.S.S.); paws crossed that Indy will earn his Bachelors’s Degree this year and continue to help John everyday.
Indy came to CWAC from a Utah valley shelter where he was picked up as a stray and little is known about his past. When CWAC director, Cathy King, went to the shelter Indy (then Melvin) was the only dog not barking and jumping around in the kennels. Cathy said her heart was immediately drawn to sweet boy and thought he would be a great companion for a veteran looking for a four-legged friend.
